ACT is a well regarded therapy that is often referred to as a third wave CBT due to its origins in cognitive behavioural therapy. ACT is based on Relational Frame Theory and emphasises the way our human language (particularly thoughts) exacerbate suffering and distress.
ACT focuses on mindfulness to help develop Psychological Flexibility and allow us to step away from unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving. There is a focus on Committed Action where clients are encouraged to move towards their values and ACT encourages us to turn towards and face our distress rather than avoid it.
